About Alterra

Alterra Capital Partners is a leading pan-African private equity firm. Formed in 2020 as a spin-out of the Africa team of The Carlyle Group, we are one of the most experienced private equity teams dedicated to the continent. We back profitable, mid-market companies and work alongside their management teams to build regional champions. Our team works from Johannesburg, Nairobi and Mauritius.

The role

As Alterra continues to grow, we are adding an Associate or Senior Associate to our capital formation and investor relations team. Working closely with the partners, you will support the firm's relationships with institutional investors across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America.

What you will do

  • Capital formation: work alongside the partners across the full fundraising cycle, from investor origination to final close
  • Market intelligence: track allocator appetite, peer fundraising and private markets trends, and turn them into insights that inform the partners' fundraising strategy
  • Investor relationships: build and manage relationships with a global base of institutional investors, as a trusted day-to-day counterpart to their investment teams
  • The Alterra investment case: help shape the firm's positioning and own its fundraising materials, turning track record and value creation into a compelling story
  • Fundraising execution: lead investor due diligence and run the fundraising pipeline and CRM, giving the partners a clear, real-time view of every process
  • Portfolio and impact storytelling: work with the deal and ESG & Impact teams to bring portfolio performance and impact to life in investor reporting, case studies and Alterra's public voice
  • Investor engagement: shape the programme for advisory committees, the annual investor conference and Alterra's presence at leading industry forums

What you bring

  • 3–7 years in private equity, investment banking, a development finance institution, or fundraising at a GP or placement agent; Africa exposure is a plus
  • A working knowledge of private markets and fund performance metrics
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills, with an eye for a compelling story
  • AI-fluent: a confident, everyday user of AI tools for research, analysis and drafting
  • Polished and discreet with senior stakeholders, and a natural team player
  • Highly organised, with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Degree in finance, economics or business; CFA or a postgraduate qualification is a plus
  • Willingness to travel internationally

Why Alterra

  • A seat at the table: work directly with the partners and see how a leading African private equity firm is built
  • A global network: build relationships with some of the world's most sophisticated investors
  • A story worth telling: the businesses we back are building Africa's next generation of champions
  • Room to grow: real responsibility from day one, and more as you deliver
