Africa50 is an infrastructure investment platform that contributes to Africa's growth by developing and investing in bankable projects, catalysing public sector capital, and mobilizing private sector funding.
Africa50 has raised over US$1.3 billion so far from 34 African governments, the African Development Bank, and institutional investors, and intends to reach a target capitalization of US$5 billion by 2030. Africa50 has an independent investment process and seeks to generate commercial risk adjusted returns for its investments across four core infrastructure sectors: energy (including power generation and related parts of the value chain), midstream gas, transportation, ICT, health and education.
Reporting to the CFO, the Senior Director, Portfolio Management & Performance, is responsible for providing comprehensive oversight of Africa50's investment portfolio performance, monitoring, valuation and reporting.
The role serves as a key source of portfolio insight for the Senior Leadership Team (“SLT”), the Investment Committee and the Board, ensuring that portfolio performance, risks, valuations and emerging issues are clearly identified, analyzed and communicated.
The Senior Director will work closely with Investment Teams, Risk and Legal to ensure the integrity of portfolio information, lead and challenge performance and valuation assumptions, identify opportunities for value creation and support effective management of the portfolio throughout the investment lifecycle.
Lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive portfolio management and performance framework supporting portfolio monitoring, valuation, analysis and reporting.
In coordination with Investment Teams, contribute to the active management of Africa50 Group portfolio (direct investment, investment companies and funds – “Portfolio”), focused on implementation of value-creation initiatives and performance improvement (analysis of portfolio performance against investment cases / business plans / budget and relevant benchmarks, identification of key drivers of performance and underperformance, monitoring of investment risks and mitigants, etc.).
Provide an integrated, forward-looking view of Portfolio performance, including market insight, key trends, emerging risks, expected distributions, liquidity and other matters relevant to Portfolio allocation and management, as well as strategic decision-making.
Lead the preparation and delivery of Portfolio Review meetings for the Investment Committee, ensuring that portfolio performance, valuation, key risks, key developments and required actions are clearly presented.
Monitor portfolio concentration and key portfolio-level exposures and highlight areas requiring management or Investment Committee attention.
Typically, 17–20+ years of relevant experience in investment management, infrastructure investment, private equity, development finance, asset management, investment banking, finance or strategy/transaction advisory.
Significant experience in portfolio management, performance management, investment monitoring and/or valuation, ideally within an private equity, infrastructure investor, DFI, sovereign wealth fund or similar institution.
Demonstrate experience working with senior investment professionals, Investment Committees and Boards.
Strong understanding of infrastructure investment, development and financing in emerging markets, with experience in Africa strongly preferred.
Strong financial modelling, valuation and analytical capabilities.
Financial engineering, finance, economics or related academic background; MBA or equivalent postgraduate qualification would be advantageous.
Demonstrated experience in improving portfolio management, reporting, data or organisational processes.
Ability to translate asset-level information into an integrated view of portfolio performance, risks, opportunities and strategic priorities.
Strong analytical capability combined with sound commercial judgement and the ability to challenge assumptions constructively.
Ability to identify the key drivers of portfolio performance and translate complex information into clear conclusions and recommendations.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with senior management, Investment Committees and Boards.
Ability to build trusted relationships and influence stakeholders across investment and corporate functions.
Highly autonomous, results-oriented and self-motivated, with the ability to combine hands-on execution with strategic and policy-level thinking.
