Job Role: 


The purpose of the role is to support and maintain AVCA reputation for excellence in research. Contribution to excellence in research will be at the level of an experienced and skilled researcher demonstrating a high level of competence and an independent standing in research. The Senior Research Associate role requires strong experience of market/industry research techniques and the ability to handle all stages of a project life cycle (from proposal to report launch), as the role holder may have full operational responsibility for research projects. Contribution to mentoring will include participation in the research team’s knowledge exchange activities and the support of research analysts and interns (where applicable). The role holder will participate in the overall contribution (individual or collaborative) of the research business unit as appropriate. 


Job Responsibilities: 

The Senior Research Associate will be responsible for conducting research projects that inform decisions, and for supporting AVCA’s research team through other tasks. S(he) will need to distil complex economic data to technical and non-technical audiences, requiring excellent communicative ability. 

The Senior Research Associate will be: 




  • Conducting individual or collaborative research projects 

  • Carrying out background research and literature reviews 

  • Collecting data, sifting, and assembling data, conducting surveys and interviews, identifying, and analysing trends and forecasts 

  • Writing technical and non-technical reports and/or briefs on industry trends and recommendations 

  • Contributing to thought leadership and writing content about relevant insight issues 

  • Analysing the impact of recent policies and developments in the industry (TBD) 

  • Participating in the research review processes 

  • Generating dashboards and dynamic data 

  • Managing the databases and developing checks to ensure quality data entry and data cleaning processes 

  • Bringing innovative ideas on research databases and suggest appropriate methods, techniques tools for assigned projects 

  • Automating tasks and data analyses using an appropriate social science analysis tool 

  • Supervising the tracking of survey respondents and activities to follow up on survey nonresponses 

  • Delivering visual and verbal (if needed) presentations 

  • Documenting research methodologies and procedures 

  • Participating in workshop with external stakeholders 

  • Performing other reasonably related job duties as assigned by the Head of research 


Liaison and networking: 

  • Collaborating closely with Head of Research to: 

  • Develop links with external contacts such as other research bodies 

  • Originate and develop external networks (for example to identify sources of funding, generate income, obtain consultancy projects, or build relationships for future activities) 

  • Secure Sponsorships and Research Consultancy contracts. 

  • Collaborating actively within and outside the organization to complete research projects and advancing thinking 

  • Working with Communications team (where needed), to help coordinate communications activities 


Managing people: 

  • Participating in mentoring and support of junior team members (analysts and interns where needed) to acquire/improve their primary skills and research techniques (for example training in data collection, cleaning, and analysis) 



Required Skills 


  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Economics, Finance, Statistics or related field 

  • Min 5 years professional market/industry research experience including project management, research design, execution, and reporting 

  • High quality standards in both setting research methods and delivering research results whether written reports or presentations 

  • Strong knowledge of private capital industry 

  • Strong technical research skills (qualitative and quantitative) 

  • Strong data management skills (ability to manipulate large data sets into clean data sets, manageable and understandable reports) 

  • Sound problem-solving skills 

  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills 

  • A good networker and written/verbal communicator 

  • Ability to sell research projects and capabilities 

  • Able to build strong links with the rest of the research team and the other business units 

  • Ability to mentor junior team members 

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel/Word/Power Point, Python, and statistical software skills 

  • Fluency in English 



Desirable Skills 


  • Strong interest in the development of the African private investment sector 

  • Fluency in French as a second language
